A stunning garden transformation in Stratford
Set in open Warwickshire countryside on the edge of Stratford-upon-Avon, this barn conversion enjoys sweeping rural views and a wonderfully peaceful setting. What it lacked was a garden to match. With little more than a blank canvas outside, the homeowners asked award-winning landscape designer Lucy Bravington to shape a series of outdoor spaces that would feel welcoming, practical and in tune with the character of the barn.
Integral to the design is Millboard Enhanced Grain Limed Oak decking. The soft, washed tones of this Millboard decking complement the timber of the building and sit comfortably alongside the existing stonework and porcelain paving, bringing the whole scheme together with an easy, natural flow.
The brief was to create a barn conversion garden design that would frame the architecture, make the most of the spectacular sunset views and provide clear zones for entertaining, relaxation and family life. The result is a garden that feels both structured and soft, with Millboard decking used to define key areas and add warmth underfoot.
Take a look around
You can explore the garden in more detail with BBC One Morning Live’s gardening expert and multi award-winning designer Mark Lane, who joins Lucy Bravington and homeowner Julie in our video tour. Together, they walk through each part of the garden, highlighting how the Millboard decking, planting and hard landscaping work together to create a calm, cohesive space.
Design vision: a garden in harmony with the barn
From the outset, Lucy wanted the garden to feel as though it truly belonged to the barn and the surrounding countryside. The property’s timber beams and stone walls already had a distinctive presence, so the new design needed to complement rather than compete with them.
Directly off the barn, Lucy designed a generous entertaining terrace finished in Millboard Enhanced Grain Limed Oak. The tone of the decking echoes the timber frame of the building, softening the transition from indoors to out and giving Julie and her family an immediate outdoor room for dining and relaxing.
This terrace is now framed with abundant, colorful planting. Grasses, perennials and shrubs soften the building line, catch the breeze and add movement around the deck. From this space, the views open out towards the countryside, while the planting and careful positioning of features ensure the garden still feels intimate and sheltering.
Millboard decking that sets the tone
Millboard Enhanced Grain Limed Oak decking was chosen for its natural, elegant appearance and reassuring performance. The gently textured surface mirrors the look of aged timber, yet it avoids many of the drawbacks that can be associated with traditional wood.
For a busy household that loves to entertain, the low maintenance and durability of the Millboard decking were key. The boards are designed to be highly resistant to algae and provide exceptional slip resistance, which is especially important in a space that flows towards a pool and hot tub. The finish also provides exceptional fade resistance, helping the Limed Oak color stay true and consistent over time, even in an exposed, sunlit garden.
Visually, the decking’s subtle grain and pale tones sit beautifully against the creamy limestone-effect porcelain paving around the pool. Together, they create a relaxed, contemporary feel that still respects the rural setting and the barn’s traditional character.
A series of inviting outdoor zones
From the main entertaining terrace, wide decked steps lead up to a dedicated swimming pool and hot tub area. Here, the garden becomes more resort-like, while still feeling connected to the house and countryside beyond.
The pool terrace is finished in limestone-effect porcelain paving, chosen for its warm, creamy color and gentle texture. Lucy used the paving to form a clean, architectural frame around the water, then balanced it with the softer tones of the Millboard decking and layers of planting.
The hot tub sits within a bespoke decked surround, making it both elegant and easy to access. The Millboard decking here provides a practical, comfortable surface, and its exceptional slip resistance offers confidence when stepping in and out, even when surfaces are wet.
Throughout the garden, sightlines have been carefully managed so that nothing interrupts the spectacular sunset views. Trees and larger shrubs have been positioned to frame the horizon, not block it, meaning the garden feels open and expansive while still offering moments of privacy and enclosure.
Planting that keeps the garden alive all year
To ensure the garden feels vibrant in every season, Lucy layered year-round planting throughout the scheme. Evergreen structure sits alongside flowering perennials, grasses and shrubs that provide a changing display of color and texture as the year progresses.
In summer, the borders around the Millboard decking are full of color and scent, attracting pollinators and creating a soft edge to the hard landscaping. In autumn and winter, seed heads, foliage and structure keep the garden interesting, even on the quietest days. The natural grain of the Limed Oak boards works gently with these seasonal shifts, reflecting light in summer and adding warmth in the cooler months.
A much-loved outdoor retreat
The finished garden balances structure with softness and practicality with beauty. There are clear, usable spaces for dining, swimming and relaxing, yet nothing feels over-designed or fussy. The Millboard decking ties the different zones together, creating a sense of continuity from the barn doors all the way down to the far end of the garden.
The clients are delighted with their transformed outdoor retreat, which has since been featured in several home and garden magazines. Having been so pleased with the results, they have commissioned Lucy to design two further gardens for their other properties, each one tailored to its setting with equally impressive outcomes.
