Elevated Coastal Living on the Chesapeake Bay

Coastal Living at Chesapeake Bay

Location Chesapeake Bay, Maryland

A View Worthy of a Finishing Touch

Perched high on a cliff overlooking the still, silvery waters of the Chesapeake Bay, this Maryland residence was conceived as a place of quiet refuge and connection to nature. The design draws inspiration from the shifting tones of sea and sky, where each sunrise spills gold across the horizon and each evening folds into tranquil blues.

For the homeowners, this wasn’t just a renovation, it was a long-held dream to create a modern coastal sanctuary that embraced its setting. Every material was chosen for its ability to balance beauty with performance. Living on the water brings its share of challenges: salt-laden air, powerful sun, and ever-changing humidity. The family wanted an exterior finish that would echo the natural warmth of timber yet remain resilient to the elements year after year, with minimal upkeep.

Choosing Millboard

After researching countless options, from painted cedar and thermally modified woods to conventional composites, the homeowners and their builder were drawn to Millboard’s unique combination of beautiful aesthetics and long-lasting durability.

For the vertical cladding, they chose Millboard Shadow Line+ in Smoked Oak. Its refined, linear profile gives the home a crisp architectural edge, while the subtle tonal variation mirrors the soft greys and weathered driftwood hues found along the shoreline. Unlike traditional timber, it won’t warp, crack, or fade under the sun’s glare, a key consideration for a property that is constantly exposed to UV and sea air.

The Enhanced Grain decking in Brushed Basalt extends the design language seamlessly from the interior to the expansive rear terrace. This broad outdoor living space frames uninterrupted views of the bay and serves as a gathering place for family and friends. The slate-toned Brushed Basalt perfectly complements the home’s contemporary palette and slate roof, creating visual continuity across every level.

Built for the Bay

The Chesapeake region experiences the full spectrum of weather, from sweltering, humid summers to brisk, salt-touched winds in winter. The composition of Millboard decking and cladding boards, a unique blend of non-wood polymer resin and mineral stone, provides an exceptional advantage over traditional timber and standard composite boards.

Engineered to withstand high moisture and constant UV exposure, Millboard decking and cladding is highly fade-resistant and exceptionally slip-resistant, even when wet. Each board is hand-molded from real oak, capturing the intricate grain and depth of natural wood without inheriting its weaknesses. The result is an outdoor surface that retains its elegance through every season, without the need for staining, sealing, or demanding maintenance.

The homeowners particularly value Millboard’s highly anti-slip surface, which has come into its own during Maryland’s rainy spells. Whether hosting gatherings or simply walking out for an early-morning coffee, the peace of mind this brings is invaluable.

An Outdoor Space to Savour

The rear deck is the true heart of this home – a generous platform designed to celebrate the spectacular coastal setting. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors open the main living area onto the terrace, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. The transition is effortless, inviting the family to dine, relax, or simply watch the water shift with the tides.

Underfoot, the Brushed Basalt decking delivers a tactile comfort that encourages lingering. Its Lastane surface layer provides a gentle underfoot feel. The muted grey tone subtly anchors the surrounding palette of glass, stone, and natural greenery, letting the breathtaking views take center stage.

Evenings on the terrace are transformed into golden-hour moments when the sun dips below the horizon and the bay mirrors a kaleidoscope of color. Discreet lighting integrated into the deck steps and balustrades adds both ambience and safety, ensuring the space can be enjoyed long after dusk.

A Coastal Retreat Made to Last

The finished result is a home that feels entirely at ease in its environment – modern yet timeless, refined yet welcoming. With Millboard products at its core, this property achieves a rare balance between aesthetic grace and enduring strength.

The Shadow Line+ cladding protects and enhances the façade, giving the home a sculptural precision that never fades. The Enhanced Grain decking extends the experience outward, offering a surface that’s not just visually striking but also built to last in one of the most demanding climates.

For the homeowners, it’s the peace of mind that matters most. Millboard’s unique material composition means they can enjoy their home without the cycle of demanding maintenance that natural wood can require. No sanding, sealing, or repainting, just the quiet satisfaction of materials that hold their beauty over time.

In an age where environmental responsibility and longevity are paramount, Millboard products offer both: their timber-free core reduces reliance on virgin wood while ensuring a lifetime of low-maintenance enjoyment.

From a design perspective, it’s the perfect finishing touch to a home defined by its surroundings – a coastal haven enhanced by craftsmanship, technology, and an appreciation for detail.
