Set high on one of Hampstead’s most desirable streets, Branch Hill exemplifies the elegance and modernity that define North London’s architectural landscape. Hampstead’s reputation for refined living attracts a discerning audience; design-conscious homeowners who value quality, craftsmanship, and materials that last.

For this exclusive residential development, SHH Architects and MY Construction sought to create a property that would harmonize with its leafy surroundings while showcasing a contemporary design language. Their vision called for a façade that blended natural warmth with architectural precision – a material that would echo the beauty of timber without its vulnerabilities.

The Brief: Natural Aesthetics, Lasting Performance

The design intent was clear from the outset: to achieve the visual richness of real wood with the reassurance of long-term performance. Given Hampstead’s microclimate – with shaded streets, high humidity, and mature trees casting dappled light – the choice of siding needed to withstand moisture, weathering, and time.

Traditional timber, though visually appealing, often struggles in such conditions. Warping, fading, and the ongoing need for treatment can quickly detract from the pristine finish demanded of high-end developments. SHH Architects therefore turned to Millboard Enhanced Grain composite boards, renowned for its authentic grain detail and exceptional resilience.

Why Millboard

Millboard’s Enhanced Grain collection was selected to bring the tactile warmth of wood to the project, while offering the long-term durability and low maintenance required by both developer and homeowner. Over 1,000 lengths of Enhanced Grain boards in Golden Oak were specified for the main façades, creating a bright, inviting tone that complements the surrounding landscape. The subtle variations in grain replicate the irregularities of hand-crafted oak boards, delivering a realism that enhances the overall architecture.

To add depth and contrast, the walls flanking the driveway were clad in 800 lengths of Enhanced Grain in Smoked Oak – a cooler, deeper tone that frames the entrance and emphasizes the geometry of the building. The dual-tone scheme reinforces the balance between natural beauty and contemporary design, resulting in a home that feels both rooted and refined.

Architectural Harmony and Detail

Branch Hill’s architecture combines sharp, modern lines with natural materials, designed to sit comfortably within its mature garden setting. The use of Millboard boards allowed the architects to maintain crisp edges and consistent spacing – something not always achievable with traditional timber, which can swell, shrink and warp over time during different seasons.

The clean vertical lines of the Enhanced Grain boards draw the eye upward, accentuating the height and lightness of the façade. In contrast, the darker tones at ground level anchor the building visually, providing a grounded base. Together, they create a visual rhythm that feels deliberate and cohesive.

The hand-molded surface of the boards, taken from the finest, real oak timbers, provides a tactile authenticity that is both seen and felt. When sunlight moves across the grain, it reveals gentle tonal shifts and subtle shadow play – qualities that give the building life throughout the day.
