A Home Steeped in Heritage

Nestled amid the tranquil Dorset countryside, White Roses is a home with history woven into every brick. Once part of the estate owned by the Rose family – the founders of the world-famous Rose’s Lime Cordial – the property carries a name that honors its storied past. Originally built around 1810 and thoughtfully extended in the 1920s, the house embodies classic English charm.

When the current owners embarked on their most recent transformation – the addition of a light-filled orangery – they envisioned not just a new room, but a renewed way of living. The goal was to create an elegant transition between the house and garden, where the boundary between indoors and outdoors would all but disappear.

The Brief

To complement the newly built orangery, the owners wanted to extend its serene, airy aesthetic outwards onto a veranda that would blur the line between inside and out. The challenge was to find a decking material that would mirror the refined interior flooring while being exceptionally durable in the elements.

This project was as much about visual continuity as it was about lifestyle. The family wanted a space that would invite them to linger outdoors all year round, whether hosting friends on summer evenings or enjoying quiet winter mornings sheltered beneath the orangery’s overhang.

The Millboard Touch

To achieve this seamless indoor-outdoor connection, the design team selected Millboard Weathered Oak Driftwood decking – a choice that proved both practical and beautiful.

Each Millboard plank captures the unique grain, texture and tone of aged timber, yet is engineered for the realities of British weather. Molded from real oak boards, Weathered Oak delivers the authentic look of timeworn wood, while being highly resistant to slippages, warping, fading or rotting that can affect natural timber.

By echoing the orangery’s internal flooring, the decking creates a visual harmony that extends the interior design outward. When the glass walls of the orangery are folded back concertina-style, the effect is striking – one continuous, flowing surface that invites light and life to move freely between spaces.

Seamless by Design

The beauty of this installation lies not only in its appearance, but in how it transforms the way the family use their home.

The orangery’s roof extends over the veranda, allowing the deck to remain protected from the rain – a clever architectural detail that turns the space into a usable outdoor room. Even when the weather turns, the family can sit outside, warm drink in hand, surrounded by the sounds and scents of the garden.

This thoughtful integration of architecture, material and setting means that the veranda doesn’t feel like an add-on; it feels like a natural continuation of the home. The deck has become an essential part of daily living – a place for morning coffee, evening gatherings, and everything in between.

Living with Millboard

For homeowner Stuart Cox, the choice of Millboard has exceeded expectations, both in look and in performance.

“When people come over, they can’t believe the deck isn’t real wood,” says Stuart. “It’s great for the kids too, because it’s highly-slip resistant.”

That combination of authenticity and practicality sits at the heart of Millboard decking’s appeal. With its exceptional slip resistance and minimal maintenance requirements, Millboard Weathered Oak decking provides peace of mind.

Unlike traditional decking, which demands regular staining, sealing or sanding, Millboard keeps its good looks with only a simple clean from time to time – leaving more hours free to enjoy the space rather than maintain it.

Craftsmanship and Character

From a design perspective, the Weathered Oak decking collection brings an organic character that complements period properties beautifully. Its soft patina and naturally varied tones blend seamlessly with heritage architecture, while the precision engineering ensures a seamless modern finish.

For White Roses, this marriage of old and new feels effortless. The historic charm of the house is enhanced, not overshadowed, by the contemporary materials. The decking reflects the home’s personality – elegant yet inviting, classic yet enduringly practical.

A Space for All Seasons

The unique wood-free composition of Millboard decking means it performs superbly in all weathers. Whether basking in sunshine or enduring the damp of a Dorset winter, the deck remains as striking and sturdy as the day it was laid.

Its high UV stability ensures the tones stay true, resisting the silvering and cracking that can age timber decks. Meanwhile, the highly slip-resistant surface makes it safe for bare feet, children and pets, even after a rain shower.

These qualities make Millboard decking more than just a design feature; it’s an investment in lasting comfort and enjoyment.

Extending the Experience

What began as a project to enhance the orangery has evolved into something much more – a reimagining of how the family connects with their home and garden. The veranda now serves as an elegant in-between space, drawing the outdoors in and the indoors out.

In summer, it’s the heart of alfresco living – a place for family meals and garden parties that continue long into the evening. In winter, it becomes a peaceful retreat, where the gentle patter of rain on the orangery roof provides a calming backdrop.

By choosing Millboard decking, the owners of White Roses have created not just a deck, but a year-round sanctuary – a space that perfectly embodies their home’s history and their vision for the future.

 Key Benefits:

  • Authentic wood grain and tone
  • Exceptionally slip-resistant surface
  • Weatherproof and low-maintenance
  • Harmonious transition between indoors and out
  • Enhanced usability of outdoor space in all seasons

A Timeless Transformation

At White Roses, the Millboard Weathered Oak deck has both extended a room, as well as deepened the relationship between the house, its history and its surroundings.

From the first step onto the veranda, it’s clear that this is a home where craftsmanship, comfort and character meet. Every detail, from the orangery’s glass walls to the softly textured decking beneath, speaks of thoughtful design and lasting quality.

It’s a fitting chapter in the story of a home that began more than two centuries ago, one that continues to evolve, gracefully, with Millboard decking proudly underfoot.
