Sunset on the St. Croix

Designer David Charlez Design

The Project

Located on the stunning St. Croix River in Wisconsin, the Sunset on the St. Croix project outstanding architectural and construction quality.

Designed by David Charlez Design and constructed by Nor Son Custom Homes, this waterfront home seamlessly integrates beauty and functionality using premium materials.

To achieve a bold, contemporary aesthetic that seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings, the project incorporates Millboard’s Enhanced Grain decking, Shadow Line+ and Board & Batten+ cladding – all in the striking Burnt Cedar finish. These materials not only deliver a dramatic visual impact but also offer exceptional durability and performance in all weather conditions.

The homeowner, Alex Lindus, is the owner of Lindus Construction, one of Millboard’s largest installers in the U.S. The experience and expertise of his team played a key role in ensuring that every detail of this build was executed to perfection.

Project Challenge

With the home situated along the St. Croix River, the design needed to accommodate both aesthetic appeal and resilience against the region’s extreme seasonal changes. The property required a decking solution that could withstand harsh winters, humid summers, and potential water exposure while maintaining a luxurious, modern appearance.

Additionally, one of the home’s defining features is a deck off one of the bedrooms, constructed using a pedestal system that incorporates Millboard’s Plas-Pro and DuoLift®. The combination of Plas-Pro’s durable, recycled plastic subframe and the DuoLift® adjustable pedestal system ensures a lightweight yet highly durable foundation, allowing for long-term structural integrity without compromising on style.

Solution by Millboard

To meet the homeowner’s vision, Millboard’s Burnt Cedar collection was selected for its striking look and superior durability. Unlike traditional wood or composite decking, Millboard is produced from a resin-mineral composite, making it highly resistant to warping, rotting, and fading.

Key Benefits of Millboard Burnt Cedar Decking:

Distinctive Aesthetic – The charred, textured finish of Burnt Cedar replicates the look of Shou Sugi Ban (traditional Japanese burnt wood) while offering a softer underfoot feel and none of the wood content.

Highly Weather-Resistant – Engineered to withstand fluctuating temperatures, and highly resistant to UV exposure and moisture – preserving its integrity and appearance over time.

Slip-Resistant Surface – The textured grain and Lastane surface layer provides excellent traction, even in wet conditions.

Low Maintenance – No staining, sealing, or sanding required – just a stunning, long-lasting finish.

Commitment to Sustainability: Millboard integrates sustainable practices throughout its operations, from using certified recycled materials to harnessing renewable energy in manufacturing. Learn more about Millboard’s sustanability roadmap.

The Build Process

One of the most technically impressive aspects of this project was the construction of the bedroom deck using a pedestal system. This innovative approach allowed for a level, floating deck surface without the need for traditional framing, ensuring proper drainage and structural integrity.

Millboard decking’s lightweight yet durable properties made it the perfect material for this application. The hidden fixing system provided a seamless appearance, allowing the Burnt Cedar tones to take centre stage.

Additionally, the Board & Batten+ Burnt Cedar cladding was used on select exterior walls, creating a cohesive architectural statement that enhances the modern aesthetic of the home.

The Result

The completed project is nothing short of breathtaking. From the warm glow of the Burnt Cedar decking at sunset to the seamless indoor-outdoor transition, every aspect of this build speaks to meticulous craftsmanship and intentional design.

The home’s luxurious deck spaces not only provide spectacular views of the St. Croix River but also offer a low-maintenance, long-lasting outdoor living space. The incorporation of the pedestal system further demonstrates the innovative approach taken to ensure both functionality and visual appeal.

For Alex Lindus and his team at Lindus Construction, this project stands as a testament to their expertise and commitment to using only the finest materials for high-end custom homes.
