In Guernsey, the rejuvenation of La Vallette Bathing Pools epitomises the revival of historic lidos across the British Isles. Dating back to 1844, Guernsey’s first sea-water bathing pool was constructed at La Valette, as the expanding harbour of St Peter Port encroached upon the surrounding beaches once used for bathing.

The pools, owned by The States of Guernsey, had long been a cherished spot for locals. However, over the years, the relentless coastal environment had taken its toll, leading to a state of disrepair. A dedicated group of enthusiasts, sensitive to the site's significance, rallied support for its restoration through grassroots action and fundraising efforts. Their vision: to return it to its former glory and create a vibrant destination for the community, a place to be shared by all.

Project Execution:
Local practice, DLM Architects, chosen through a public-private community proposal, spearheaded the design and construction process. The challenge lay in winning the approval of the existing community of swimmers, numbering around 600, who held a sentimental attachment to the pools. DLM addressed their concerns by devising a design that retained the building's essence while making it more welcoming and accessible. The footprint remained largely unchanged, with careful alterations made to enhance functionality and aesthetics.

Millboard Product Supplied:
Envello Shadow Line+ resin mineral composite cladding in Limed Oak, by Millboard, was used to clad the covered changing area, upper pavilion, and sections of the café floor area. This choice was informed by the need for a durable, low-maintenance material capable of withstanding the extreme weather and tides characteristic of the coastal environment.

Project Outcome:

The revitalised La Vallette Bathing Pools, with its thoughtful design and community-driven approach, has received widespread acclaim. It is now a year-round destination, offering not just swimming facilities but also a community pavilion and events space. The project's success is underscored by its nomination for both local and national architecture awards, including the RIBA Awards 2024, a testament to its architectural significance and positive social impact.

Customer Feedback:
David De La Mare, Managing Director of DLM Architects, expressed excitement and honour over the project's nomination, highlighting the positive social impact it had on the community.

"Feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive, affirming the project's success in providing a world-class facility that all can enjoy."

"Millboard was the perfect product for this building, which must withstand extreme weather and tides and so we needed a product that was hard wearing and needed minimal maintenance. We have had multiple enquiries from people asking what product we used, so it must have gone down well!"
