Set within the striking desert landscape just outside Joshua Tree, AWE Ranch is a 7,500 sq ft off-grid retreat designed to bring people closer to the raw beauty of its surroundings. Spread across 358 acres, it was created as a space for artists and thinkers to gather, recharge, and draw inspiration from the quiet power of the landscape.
Developed by contractor Richard Pruitt, the project set out to achieve something radical: a sustainable destination that supports human connection and creativity while treading lightly on the land. This ambition mirrors Millboard’s own Live.Life.Outside ethos, making the collaboration a natural fit from the outset.
Now completed, the ranch is a striking example of what careful material choices and thoughtful design can achieve in one of the world’s most challenging environments.
The Vision: A Low-Impact Haven for Creative Exploration
Joshua Tree is renowned for its otherworldly terrain – vast skies, sculptural boulders, and light that seems to shift by the minute. But its beauty comes hand-in-hand with extreme desert conditions. Temperature swings, intense UV exposure, and minimal rainfall demand materials with exceptional resilience.
The project team needed building solutions that would withstand this weathering without constant upkeep, while also offering aesthetic warmth and the flexibility to use products beyond their traditional scope.
